Reducing Inconsistencies in Point Observations of Maximum Flood Inundation Level

چکیده
Flood simulation models and hazard maps are only as good as the underlying data against which they are calibrated and tested. However, extreme flood events are by definition rare, so the observational data of flood inundation extent are limited in both quality and quantity. The relative importance of these observational uncertainties has increased now that computing power and accurate lidar scans make it possible to run high-resolution 2D models to simulate floods in urban areas. However, the value of these simulations is limited by the uncertainty in the true extent of the flood. This paper * Corresponding author address: B. L. The observation dataset is based on a collection of wrack and water marks from two postevent surveys. A smoothing algorithm for identifying, quantifying, and reducing localized inconsistencies in the dataset is proposed and evaluated showing positive results. The proposed smoothing algorithm can be applied in order to improve flood inundation modeling assessment and the determination of risk zones on the floodplain.

3d Flood Information from Sar as a Means for Reducing Uncertainties in Flood Inundation Modeling
SAR images of river inundation prove to be very relevant for operational flood management. However, common exploitation of satellite images of floods is generally restricted to a flood extent extraction. The usefulness of these images could be significantly improved by providing a hydraulic-coherent 3-dimensional (3D) characterization of floods and by integrating these Remote Sensing-Derived (R...
متن کاملUtility of different data types for calibrating flood inundation models within a GLUE framework
To translate a point hydrograph forecast into products for use by environmental agencies and civil protection authorities, a hydraulic model is necessary. Typical one-and two-dimensional hydraulic models are able to predict dynamically varying inundation extent, water depth and velocity for river and floodplain reaches up to 100 km in length. However, because of uncertainties over appropriate s...
متن کاملDevelopment of Flood Inundation Libraries Using Historical Satellite Data and Dem for Part of Godavari Basin: an Approach towards Better Flood Management
Conventional method of identifying areas to be inundated for issuing flood alert require inputs like discharge data, fine resolution digital elevation model (DEM), software for modelling and technically trained manpower to interpret the results meaningfully. Due to poor availability of these inputs, including good network of historical hydrological observations and limitation of time, quick flo...

Washington, DC, the capital of the U.S., is located along the Upper Tidal Potomac River, where a reliable operational model is needed for making predictions of storm surge and river-induced flooding. We set up a finite volume model using a semi-implicit, Eulerian-Lagrangian scheme on a base grid (200 m) and a special feature of sub-grids (10 m), sourced with high-resolution LiDAR data and bathy...
متن کاملApplications of Satellite-Based Rainfall Estimates in Flood Inundation Modeling - A Case Study in Mundeni Aru River Basin, Sri Lanka
The performance of Satellite Rainfall Estimate (SRE) products applied to flood inundation modelling was tested for the Mundeni Aru River Basin in eastern Sri Lanka. Three SREs (PERSIANN, TRMM, and GSMaP) were tested, with the Rainfall-Runoff-Inundation (RRI) model used as the flood inundation model. All the SREs were found to be suitable for applying to the RRI model. The simulations created by...
